One of the easiest upgrade objectives in the Discover Japan Collection Journal in Forza Horizon 6 is the Restrictor Plate challenge. The tricky part is that most normal road cars do not even show the upgrade option, so a lot of players end up confused when searching through the tuning menu.

The good news is that you can finish this objective in just a few minutes with a cheap setup and immediately grab the rewards tied to the Journal milestone.

Why the Restrictor Plate Upgrade Is Confusing

Unlike regular engine upgrades, restrictor plates are not available on most production vehicles by default. The option is mainly tied to race-spec engines and dedicated motorsport cars.

That means if you enter the upgrade shop with a standard street car, the Restrictor Plate category usually will not appear at all.

The easiest workaround is to either:

Use a factory racecar

Install a racing engine swap on a compatible car

Once the upgrade appears in the menu, the Journal objective can be completed almost instantly.

Best Cars to Use

Several vehicles work well for this challenge, but some are much faster and cheaper than others.

Factory racecars are the simplest option because they already support restrictor plates without extra tuning work. Cars from Formula Drift are especially useful since many of them already come with race-focused engine configurations.

Some players also use rally or time attack vehicles because the upgrade path is already unlocked.

If you want the cheapest route possible, it is usually better to buy an inexpensive road car and install the required engine swap instead of purchasing a high-end racecar.

How to Complete the Restrictor Plate Objective

The actual process is very simple once you have the correct car.

Drive to any Festival Site or Player House.

Open Garage.

Go to Upgrades & Tuning.

Select Custom Upgrade.

If needed, open the Conversion tab and install a racing engine swap.

Return to the Engine upgrades section.

Look for the Restrictor Plate category.

Install any version of the upgrade.

Interestingly, even selecting the “No Restrictor Plate” option can still trigger the challenge completion once the category becomes available.

After saving the setup and returning to free roam, the Collection Journal notification should appear almost immediately.

How to Claim the Rewards

A lot of players miss this step because the rewards are not automatically added.

After completing the objective:

Open the pause menu.

Navigate to the Journal tab.

Enter the Discover Japan section.

Open the Upgrades category.

Select the completed Restrictor Plate milestone.

Once claimed, you will receive the rewards tied to that challenge. Depending on your progression, this can include Credits, XP, and bonus Wheelspins.

For such a quick objective, the payout is honestly worth the few minutes it takes.

A Good Shortcut for the Full Upgrade Checklist

The Restrictor Plate task is also useful because the same car can often be reused for several other Discover Japan upgrade objectives.

If you are planning to finish the entire upgrade checklist, it is smart to keep one compatible vehicle and continue modifying it for challenges like:

Centrifugal Supercharger (CSC)

Twin Turbo upgrades

Racing aspiration swaps

Engine conversion objectives

Doing everything on one car saves a lot of credits and cuts down on menu time.

For many players, the hardest part of the Collection Journal is simply figuring out which upgrades are hidden behind specific engine swaps. Once you understand that system, challenges like the Restrictor Plate objective become some of the easiest rewards in the game.
